Sedan and coupe versions of the car will go on sale in the US around September

Honda has revealed the first images of the 2013 Accord sedan and coupe variants. The new car will be bigger and more luxurious, says the company.

Styling wise, the new Accord is even more sedate than the previous version. The exterior dimensions have been reduced to improve driveability and to make it easier to park. The front grille is an evolution of the previous model and complements the lines of the hood. The redesigned bumper includes a mesh grille and rectangular fog lamps. The headlamp cluster has integrated day time running lamps and projection lights. 

The strong side character line on the current Accord has become more pronounced, and still flows through the door handles and flares upward toward the rear. The line near the base of the doors has been smoothened and now starts at the side of the front bumper and goes all the way to the rear doors. 

The boot looks more pronounced thanks to some sharp lines, a redesigned rear bumper and a chrome strip atop the number plate. The tail lamps are bigger and feature LED lights for the brake signal.Honda has worked on the car’s underbody to improve air flow, thus reducing drag and improving fuel efficiency.

Honda says that the new Accord will have increased passenger and cargo space thanks to improved interior packaging. It will be equipped with advanced technologies on the inside says the company, though no details have been revealed. No details about its powerplants have been revealed either. 

Honda has not given any indication if it will be launching this car in India. The Accord has been struggling, and in June only 52 units were sold. The Skoda Superb in comparison sold 250 units. The wait for a new Accord may be longer for us considering the fact that Honda is working hard to tune its 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine for the Indian market, and is unlikely to launch the car without it. The dearth of a diesel engine in its line-up has been hurting Honda’s sales across categories, and even forced the car maker to discontinue the Civic.

Honda's indian partner in Honda Siel has just announced that it has sold its stake in the joint venture to its Japanese partner, Honda Motor Company

Usha international, part of the Shriram Group, the Indian partner in the Honda-Siel joint venture has just announced that it has sold its entire stake in the enterprise to its Japanese partner, Honda Motor Company. The Shriram Group has had a long relationship with Honda since they introduced the Japanese company’s power products (such as generator sets) in India way back in 1985. And since 1995, the two companies have worked together to make and sell Honda’s cars in the country.

Usha International Limited (UIL) played a major role in Honda setting up shop in India and the first car that came out of the joint venture, christened Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI), was the originalHonda City, introduced to Indian car buyers in 1996. Since then, the JV has rolled out two more generations of the City, along with a slew of other internationally successful Honda cars such as the Civic, CR-V, Jazz and the latest one of the lot just last year, the Brio.

As part of the disinvestment deal, Honda Motor Company, Japan, purchased the entire 3.18 percent stake (some 180,000,000 shares) UIL held in the venture for a total of Rs 180 crore. Following this sale, now HSCI is a 100 percent subsidiary of Honda in India. According to the statement released to the press, UIL announced that it had shown an interest in divesting from the joint venture to be able to focus and strategically invest to expand its own core business and that the decision was based on mutual consent.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Hironori Kanayama, President & CEO, HSCI, said, “We have shared a very successful and fruitful relationship with UIL over the past 17 years. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for Mr. Siddharth Shriram’s contributions to HSCI and wish UIL a bright future.” As for the future, Honda seems set in its plans for the Indian market, and the split should not affect the Japanese auto giant’s customers in the country in any way. As for what this means in the long term, only time will tell.
