Possible BMW F 650GS Launch in India

by Rayomand Darius Posted on 29 Mar 20123,363 Views4 Comments

BMW's ultimate all terrain do-anything go-anywhere motorcycle the GS 1200R has a more affordable baby brother, and is bound for India, stay tuned

BMW F 650GS
BMW F 650GS - Traditional GS styling, bold off road stance.

Enjoy the sheer thrill of riding? Having the wind blow at your visor, doing that with no holds barred? Except, worried that a more super sport breed of motorbike does not comply with your all round comfort requirements or finances? Well BMW has just answered your prayers as they will soon launch the baby GS here in India at a very affordable price tag. The GS is, undoubtedly, an extremely capable machine, waving its reputed legacy flag high up in the air which its older, more matured siblings have set for it, including wins at the Paris Dakar Rallies and cross world touring history.

The bike is called the F 650GS, and will use the same motor that propels its older, identically displaced sibling – the F 800GS that produces 86PS of power, the difference between the two is that the F 650F is detuned to 72PS from its 798cc engine, which is enough to get your heart racing to the tune of that smooth growling parallel-twin power plant. The water-cooled, 4-stroke, four valves per cylinder, DOHC engine is a perfect combination of performance and practicality. It will have a 6-speed gearbox and will be equipped with a single disc up front and a single one at the rear wheel with an Anti-lock Brake System that can be switched off when you decide to go off roading. The GS is chain driven and has an under-seat silencer as well.

BMW F 650GS
Go anywhere, do anything.

The F 650GS is ideal for one who enjoys the sheer thrill of exploring the outdoors. This bike will bring you more smiles per mile as you cruise by the wilderness or by the beach, or simply going ballistic on the streets.

New seven-seater Mitsubishi Outlander Launched

by Sukhpreet Singh Posted on 29 Mar 201224,446 Views2 Comments

Priced at Rs. 20.55 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi, the new offering from Mitsubishi now comes with a seven-seat layout

New Mitsubishi Outlander seven seater

Just two weeks after the launch of the new Pajero, Japanese car maker Mitsubishi has launched a seven-seater version of the Outlander SUV. Earlier launched in 2010, the Outlander retains the 2.4-litre motor on the outgoing model that delivers 170PS of power and 226Nm of torque mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

From the outside, the new Outlander doesn’t look too different from the earlier model, sans the fighter jet-inspired grille that enhances its aggressive stance. Inside, the third-row seating with tumble function can now accommodate children. The car remains as feature-rich as before with keyless entry, a Rock Ford Fosgate 710-watt six CD changer with USB port, split tailgate, paddle shifts, cruise control and a 3-spoke steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

Third row ideal for children

Launched in just a single variant, the new Outlander comes with HID (High-Intensity-Discharge) headlamps with adaptive frontlight system or AFS. Safety features comprise ABS and EBD along with RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body and dual front passenger airbags. At Rs 20.55 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi, the Outlander is now priced a notch above than the previous model.

The car-maker has been relatively slow in bringing its products to the country. Whether it has been the Lancer, the Lancer Cedia or the ultimate Lancer Evolution X, the company is taking one step at a time. However, with the back-to-back launch of the Pajero Sport and the new Outlander, HM-Mitsubishi seems to have turned a new leaf. The new Pajero also bowled over automotive journalists and buyers alike with its dapper looks and extreme off-roading capabilities.

2012 Audi A4: First Drive

by Priyadarshan Bawikar Photography: Kunal Khadse Posted on 22 Mar 201230,110 Views0 Comments

With its siblings all grown up recently, the A4 has finally decided to step into their shoes and do some growing up of its own. The result is the same A4 that we've come to love so much, but in a much more mature and an absolutely brilliant guise

A new Audi is always an interesting prospect. The Ingolstadt based auto maker is known for making cars which are not just extremely practical, but also great to drive, and this is something that the new A8, A6 and A7 have demonstrated rather well. So the chance to drive a new Audi saloon on the coastal roads around the town of Cascais in Portugal is something any automobile enthusiast would kill for. This is exactly what I had in my head as I was alighting from my flight at Lisbon airport. So when the gaggle of auto media was told that the A4 we’d be driving wasn’t really a new car, but more of an upgrade, slight looks of disappointment could be seen all around the room.

But still, with the amount of changes the presenters from Audi listed out, some amount of hope was beginning to return. A mad rush to get our hands on the cars in the parking lot at Lisbon airport left me with the 1.8 TFSI model, that too with the 6-speed manual gearbox. Great! But that rush also ensured that no one really got the opportunity to examine all the exterior changes that Audi has incorporated in this upgraded A4. So first impressions were left to the interiors, and the first reaction was, “Wait a second, isn’t this the A6?”

2012 Audi A4 side

Audi has gone to great lengths to get their current design language, which also includes all the interior trim, common between all their platforms. And this is not a bad thing at all, because what they’ve done with these interiors is simply fabulous. Rich black plastics, wood trim and dark tan leather upholstery adorn the insides, forming a wonderful cocoon around you and making you feel instantly at ease with the car. The changes over the interiors of the current A4 aren’t drastic, but all the subtle ones amount to a feel that is much more opulent. A case in point being the three-spoke steering wheel which not only looks good, but is an absolute delight to grip in your hands.

New Hyundai i-Gen i20 Launched

by Rahul Basu Posted on 28 Mar 201255,738 Views9 Comments

With an all new-fluidic styling and first-in-segment features that should do wonders in prolonging the shelf life of this well-to-do urban hatchback in India, the new Hyundai i-Gen i20 has been launched in 12 variants starting from Rs 4.73 lakh for the base Petrol variant all the way upto Rs 7.67 lakh for the automatic

New Hyundai i-Gen i20 front static

Long before the arrival of the fluidic Verna and the sexy Eon models, Hyundai had become a household brand in the eyes of the Indian car buyer, and when we look at the company’s sales charts from just a few years passed, one name stands out, the i20.

It’s been the Korean car makers big ticket seller ever since it was launched in 2008, courtesy its wide choice of variants on offers, great mileage on the road, cavernous seating and great styling. That being said, it was only a matter of time before the company’s globally successful premium hatch received the very delectable ‘fluidic’ design treatment, which it now has very proudly adorned.

For those who were spellbound by the re-incarnation of i20 model in its fluidic avatar at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the good news is that it’s finally here, and has been launched in 12 variants by Hyundai for its Indian customers.

The new i-Gen family hatch hasn’t just gotten pretty on the outside with a more heptagonal grille and attractively flowing body lines, but like the 2008 model once again it looks to set standards in its class of vehicles with features like a Rear Parking Camera with display in the cabin mirror, an Electro Chromic Mirror offering anti-glare vision, an Auto-Headlight Control Function, Clean Air-Cluster ionizers and rain sensing wipers.

Speaking about the New i-Gen i20, Mr BS Seo, Managing Director and CEO said, ”The New i-Gen i20 is a bold new offering with stylish looks and a host of unique features. Our extensive surveys indicated that the customer is seeking hi-tech and innovative features, we have incorporated the research findings in the i-Gen i20 to offer a high value proposition.”

There were talks about a new 1.1 litre 3 cylinder U-II diesel engine with BlueDrive technology for the next gen model in European markets, and that’s exactly where it’s headed. For India, the fluidic i20 settles for a more powerful and refined 1.2 Kappa petrol engine with a Dual VTVT mechanism which delivers 84PS of power, a 4PS scoop over the previous Kappa mill.

New Hyundai i-Gen i20 interiors

The 1.4 U2 CRDi diesel was great to begin with and will continue providing thrust to the new age i20 mated to a 6-speed manual transmission delivering the identical 90PS of power and 220 Nm of torque. It’ s a lot more muscle for all the extra cash you can spare if you are even considering the 1.4 Gamma automatic petrol model which peaks at 100PS of power and a solid 136.3Nm of torque.

To add to the overall premium look and feel of the next gen model features like Smart Key with Push Button Start, a One Touch Triple Turn signal, Leather wrapped steering wheel, a Driver seat arm rest, Electrically adjustable folding and Heated rear view mirrors and Tilt and telescopic steering will be offered as standard on the car. Expect all the standard USB, Bluetooth connectivity and entertainment functions on the new car as well.

Safety gets a big thumbs up on the new model as well with the inclusion of 6 Airbags, an ABS system, clutch lock system (to prevent accidental starts), a smart pedal system (in the event of panic braking, the brake pedal overrides the accelerator), speed sensing auto door locking and impact sensing auto door unlocking (in the unfortunate event of a collision) and Reverse Parking Sensors.

Built to cater to the stringent European emission standards the i-Gen i20 is cleaner and more efficient than before and as per ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) tests the i-Gen i20 petrol (1.2 Kappa Dual VTVT) delivers a mileage of 18.5 kmpl, the diesel variant (1.4 CRDi) delivers a mileage of 21.9 kmpl and the automatic transmission variant (1.4 ltr petrol) delivers 15 kmpl.

All 12 variants of the all New i-Gen i20 will go up for sale immediately with the petrol variants ranging from Rs 4.73 lakh to Rs 6.65 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), while the diesel variants have been priced starting from Rs 5.96 to Rs 7.44 (ex-showroom Delhi). At the top of the trim level pyramid is the i20 automatic variant priced at Rs 7.67 lakh.

Honda CBR 250R: First Ride

by Sopan Sharma Pics: Rishad Cooper Posted on 22 Dec 2010153,497 Views41 Comments

Set for its Indian launch in April 2011, the Honda CBR250R is a well-rounded new bike for the world, and promises to have something for every sort of rider - all that at a great price point

The muggy morning in Pattaya makes things inside the helmet almost as sticky as the friendly ladies on the streets the evening before. In the pit lane of the local Bira Circuit however lie promises of a good morning, neatly lined up in rows. Riding an all new bike is almost always like venturing into untested waters, but what’s special is that this time around, the territory is uncharted for the manufacturer and the market too. That ought to justify the nervous excitement at the time of the launch of the bike, barely 24 hours back in Bangkok. This has not been tried before, and while everyone can see its potential, no one knows for sure if everyone else can see things the same way.

The CBR250R, for one, marks a bunch of firsts for the world’s largest motorcycle company. It is the first sportbike from the company to be manufactured completely in the ASEAN region, with Thailand and India as the only manufacturing hubs. The shift towards smaller displacement, more accessible bikes has been obvious worldwide, but the quarter-litre CBR breaks new ground in this category as well, by becoming one of the first modern single cylinder sportbikes with this displacement. It is not just about the displacement and the engine configuration though, the CBR250R marks a new way of thinking from the Big H. And it all starts with the bike’s design.

Baby Ceeber? More like baby Veefer…
The CBR badge has been the proud carrier of Honda’s race replica tradition, but for the first time ever, this is a CBR that looks more like a VFR – Honda’s sport-touring range. The futuristic theme of large, flowing and delicately contoured panels flows along the length and width of the bike. The Y-headlamp at the front presents distinct areas for the main beam and the pilot lights, enhancing the visual spread of the front end. The centerpiece of the bike’s design though is the large middle cowl, which gives the CBR250R a baby VFR1200F appeal. Couple that with a chunky pentagonal exhaust, and you have a profile that that stands for being sporty yet tame, fast yet elegant. Most importantly though, the design of the CBR250R says a lot about Honda’s intentions to leave track bikes on the racetrack, and become more accessible and mainstream with its street offerings. Swing your leg astride the wide saddle, and this statement of purpose of the new bike becomes as clear as daylight.

In the saddle
Tall clip-ons and lots of space on the seat again hint at a more touring role than a proper corner carver, which should widen the base of buyers, while making it an even better bike for a daily commute. Bring the engine to life and its smoothness and refinement despite the solitary reciprocating piston make the work gone into achieving this obvious. Slot the precise gearshift into first, release the light clutch and you have acceleration aided by easily rising revs that make the front wheel go light with haste. The short stroke motor (76mm bore x 55mm stroke) has almost the same dimensions as Honda’s famed litre-class CBR1000RR, as shown by the eagerness of the engine to pick speed. As the throaty engine note rises, the torque drops just a tad bit in the midrange before a blastful top end hits around 8,500 rpm and then continues up to its high-revving redline. Throttle response is excellent and expect the engine to work just as well in city traffic as on highways and twisties.

When it came to chucking the bike into corners at the Bira Circuit, composure was the name of the game, in true Honda style. The diamond frame which uses the engine as a stressed member and trusses on the chassis for extra rigidity works like a charm, and handles all of the ample acceleration that the engine throws at it. While it tips easily into corner entry, the bike does tend to stand up if mid-corner corrections are not subtle. Through Bira’s two left-right chicanes though, it was easy to change direction which points at a sorted out steering geometry, which will stand the riders in good stead on city streets through traffic. Braking at the front and back is stellar, with ample bite and feedback, so you know exactly when and how to shed speed despite a small amount of front end dive that comes into play as you hit the lever. The CBR250R is not a sharp track attack weapon dripping with feedback, and going with the flow is the best way to extract most out of its not-so-light 161 kilogram mass. The ride characteristics are apt for city riding and touring, with enough potential to carry a good clip on mountain passes.
